Importance of Using a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

board-certified plastic surgeon

Cosmetic surgery is quite popular in today’s society. It’s become commonplace for people to seek cosmetic improvements to their appearance. Whether it’s to look younger or to optimize a body part, people can choose to seek medical assistance to make these alterations.

Plastic surgery can also be helpful to people who have become disfigured due to an accident or illness. The availability of quality cosmetic procedures can be a very positive and empowering thing.

It can change the way people feel about themselves and bring about increased self-esteem. Unfortunately, many patients are hoping to cut the costs of high-priced procedures by seeking treatment from practitioners who are not certified and may not possess the experience needed to perform such specialized work. This route can be dangerous. The importance of using a board-certified plastic surgeon for any cosmetic treatments cannot be overstated.

Expertise

In the case of having a cosmetic procedure performed by a practitioner who is not a board-certified plastic surgeon, it’s important to understand that even someone who may possess an MD may not have the expertise to take on aesthetic medical treatments, particularly surgical ones.

For a plastic surgeon to become certified, they must undergo five years of specific training in face and body procedures. Someone without such expertise will likely not have the knowledge to perform such specialized endeavors.

Sometimes these individual undergo some training and may even display a certificate. It’s important that you check references and look for proof of certification from the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.

Aesthetics

Even if you do luck out and get a medical practitioner who can perform your procedure safely, simply knowing the steps of a procedure isn’t sufficient to ensure it is done well in a way that is most aesthetically pleasing.

For example, it takes extensive training to be able to determine the correct size of breast implants to use on a certain body frame, and a board-certified surgeon would know when liposuction would be an insufficient method of treating excessive sagging body skin.

Saving some money isn’t worth endangering your safety or the risk of receiving a botched procedure. Always be sure to request proof that your chosen professional is a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Safe Facilities

By choosing a board-certified practitioner, you can be assured that your procedure will take place in a facility that is also approved by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.

Also, if you require anesthesia during your treatment, the anesthetist will also be required to hold proper certification. You want to feel confident that the facility has equipment in place to handle emergencies and that all personnel is knowledgeable in their particular roles.

When inquiring about facility certifications, look for these acronyms: AAAASF, AAAHC or JCAHO. Anesthetists should either be a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) or a board-certified anesthesiologist.
